Central Kentucky has many overnight accommodations,so the pursuit of amateur sporting events has become a big business. It has improved the region’s economic development and reputation as a tourist destination. This is a trend that is also recognized nationwide. As of 2008, there are 350 sports commissions and authorities like LASA in the United States.

In general, sports and its economic and social benefits possess multi-faceted appeal. From the hospitality industry viewpoint, the large number of visitors associated with sports events is a “natural” source of room night production. With amateur athletic activity peaking during the traditionally slow summer months, sporting events, especially those involving youth, are a natural for bolstering city-wide visitation and revenue during the off-peak period.

From a community perspective, athletics is a powerful vehicle through which to promote civic pride, health and vitality, sportsmanship, anti-drug programs, and numerous other worthwhile social messages. Through extensive youth directed programming, LASA is equally dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for youth in the Bluegrass.
