Kentucky - Unbridled Spirit The Bluegrass State games The National Association of Sports Commissions Team Kentucky

Concept

The primary purpose of the Lexington Area Sports Authority (LASA) is to promote amateur sports in the Lexington area by bringing in, and supporting, quality amateur athletic events. These events, which utilize local public and private facilities and resources, have a tremendous social and economic impact on the community.

In addition, LASA actively supports the development of youth sports programs and events as a positive alternative to drugs and gangs and, as a means of introducing goals and positive values to youth. Every boy and girl, regardless of age, ability level, and/or socio-economic background, should be exposed to, and provided with, the opportunity to participate in sports.

As a result of the tremendous room night potential available, the pursuit of amateur sporting events has become big business for tourist and economic development councils, both around the state and on the national level. The number of sports commissions/authorities in the United States has grown to 350 as of 2008. This testifies to the tremendous benefits gained from a dedication to sports.

Nationally, sports is a $550 billion dollar a year business employing more than 11.2 million people. Amateur sports provide the majority of the economic impact.

In general, sports and its economic and social benefits possess multi-faceted appeal. From the hospitality industry viewpoint, the large number of visitors associated with sports events is a “natural” source of room night production. With amateur athletic activity peaking during the traditionally slow summer months, sporting events, especially those involving youth, are a natural for bolstering city-wide visitation and revenue during the off-peak period.

From a community perspective, athletics is a powerful vehicle through which to promote civic pride, health and vitality; sportsmanship; anti-drug programs and numerous other worthwhile social messages. Through extensive youth directed programming, LASA will be equally dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for youth in the Bluegrass area.

The Central Kentucky area has the resources and infrastructure – facilities; air and land access; transportation; climate; housing and housing services; municipal and county services; professional sports clubs and athletes; corporate base, etc.- to compete on any level with any major destination or program in the country.
For example, Central Kentucky plays host to some of the most heralded sporting events like: KHSAA Sweet 16 Basketball State Tournament, Bluegrass State Games, Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, and NCAA Basketball First and Second Round Regional Games.

However, venues, housing, and location are not enough. To succeed on an on-going basis, LASA and the Central Kentucky market will have to distinguish itself from the competition. To do this, we must be sensitive to what makes these events a success….and that is- Community Resources and Support.
